MAGUIRE’S CAPTAIN ARMBAND HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH ANYTHING! GET OVER YOURSELF!

If the title of this article dragged you here, you are welcome. Also, if you genuinely believe that Harry Maguire being captain is the problem of Manchester United, this is for you.

For the life of me, I don’t understand how you can seriously think the armband is playing a critical role in the present “crisis” at Old Trafford.

With all due respect, it doesn’t make sense.

I mean, with all the tactical problems, shoehorning, questionable defending, bad finishing, poor decision making in the final third, and deficient positional awareness, your issue is Maguire being captain?

Are you joking?

If you’re one of those who happened upon this bandwagon and ignorantly joined the mob in the agenda, here’s a breakdown of the scenario that made Maguire the captain of Manchester United.

  • 5 August 2019: Manchester United announced the signing of Harry Maguire for a ridiculous fee of £80 million.
  • Ashley Young was named club captain that summer.
  • Ashley Young was not playing as often.
  • With Young’s reduced playing time, the following players got the opportunity to temporarily wear the armband: Harry Maguire, David De Gea, Nemanja Matic, Marcus Rashford, Jesse Lingard, and Axel Tuanzebe.
  • January 2020 came and Ashley Young left the club.
  • To the amazement of many, including myself, Harry Maguire was subsequently announced as the permanent club captain.

Here’s a comment from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at the time: “He’s come in and been a leader in the group. I’ve been, not surprised, but I’ve been impressed by his leadership skills, so Harry will keep on wearing the armband.”

Even though the decision to make Harry Maguire the club captain came as a surprise, the reality at the time tells us that he was a legitimate choice.

A glance at the squad shows that David De Gea & Nemanja Matic were the other genuine contenders for that armband.

Man Utd outfield player as of 17 January 2020

The mean age of outfield players in the squad at the time was — 23.92

The median age of outfield players in the squad at the time was — 23.50

Harry Maguire was at least two years older than half of the squad [i.e outfield players] at the time. Only five players were older than him:

  • Jesse Lingard [27]: No way the armband was going to him
  • Phil Jones [28]: No way the armband was going to him
  • Marcos Rojo [29]: No way the armband was going to him. He eventually went on loan at the end of January 2020.
  • Juan Mata [31]: No way the armband was going to him
  • Nemanja Matic [31]: He could have gotten the armband, but he wasn’t a regular in the XI at the time.

After Ashley Young left the club, the choice for the armband was practically a straight shootout between David De Gea & Harry Maguire. In situations like this, it isn’t uncommon for the manager to opt for the regular Centre-Back.

Interestingly, at the end of the 19/20 season, Harry Maguire & David De Gea were the only players who featured in all the 38 PL games for the club.

I know you’re angry at the present performance of the club, but your revisionist outrage about the armband is misplaced. It’s a trivial matter in the current circumstances.

You can take the armband off Harry Maguire today, give it to your favourite player in the squad, and the problems won’t change.

Liverpool fans once had a similar problem with Jordan Henderson. He didn’t fit the profile of a “Liverpool Captain”. He was appointed to fill the big shoes of Steven Gerrard. He became the regular scapegoat for everything that went wrong on the pitch for Liverpool.

Fortunately for him, Jurgen Klopp arrived, things started to look good for Liverpool, and many fans began to see Jordan Henderson in a different light.

Football fans get outraged over trivial matters when the results are bad. And you [who’s getting outraged over Maguire as Man Utd captain] are one of such fans.

As I close, I want you to take this simple test on your own:

  • Who was Man Utd’s Captain between 2006–2009?
  • Who’s the present Captain of Man City?
  • Who’s the present Captain of PSG?
  • Who’s the present Captain of Inter Milan?
  • Who’s the present Captain of AC Milan?
  • Who was the Captain of Bayern Munich while Neuer was out for a year [17/18]?

If you completed the test without guessing or looking it up on Google, SIUUUU!!!

Otherwise, you’re an otu. Say after me, “I am an otu!”

Seriously though, if you struggled to answer those questions, it’s possible you don’t really care about who wears the armband. It’s also possible you’re just a bandwagon follower who loves the chest pain that comes from consistent outrage.

May the force be with you, dear.

Meanwhile, harvest is coming for Manchester United!

Harvest szn is here! Get ready!

  • otu is a Nigerian slang that describes someone that’s not skilled at something.
  • If you’re not a football fan, you can share this with your friends who are football fans.
