BORN OF THE FREEWOMAN

In this chapter, Apostle Paul further elucidates on the revelation he had laid bare in the previous chapter.

“Now I say, That the heir, as long as he is a child, differeth nothing from a servant, though he be lord of all; but is under tutors and governors until the time appointed of the father.” — This was an illustration of our journey (as believers) from slavery to sonship. In between slavery and sonship was the law. The law served as “tutors”. However, the appointed time came. The time for us to gain stature and lay hold on the inheritance that had been given to us a long time ago. And this was fulfilled by the coming of our Lord, Jesus Christ.

By virtue of Jesus Christ, we effectively became heirs of God.

Apostle Paul rang this reality to the ears of the Galatians. He communicated to them that, by holding on to the things of the law, they were forsaking their inheritance in Christ and returning to their previous state of Slavery.

From verses 21–31, he explained the symbolic impact of Abraham’s relationship with Hagar (bondwoman) and Sarah (freewoman). He highlighted how Ishmael was born after the flesh, while Isaac was after the promise (which colloquially meant the Spirit, as we saw later).

At the end of the chapter, Apostle Paul had introduced the concept of the flesh and the Spirit. He reiterated that, because we believe in Jesus Christ, we are now children of the freewoman (of the Spirit)…and it’s appropriate that we act accordingly.
